Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne told Parliament today (Aug. 09) the government was considering the abolition of emergency regulations soon.
A decision would be taken following a finalization of consultations with the National Security Council, he said during the debate to extend the state of emergency.
The premier said the proposal has already been made to the NSC and would also be presented to parliament shortly.
According to him, since the end of the war against the LTTE in May 2009, most of the clauses in the Public Security Ordinance have been abolished.
However, a few of its clauses remain in force since the LTTE continues to be active overseas.
