Sri Lanka security forces continue to recover hauls of LTTE weapons in the North

Sri Lankan security forces engaged in search and clear operations continue to find large stocks of military items hidden in the Northeastern jungles by the eradicated Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Air craft missiles, grenade launchers, white prosperous bombs, and an assortment of various types of bombs including mortar bombs and Arul bombs were among the items recovered by the troops of Task Force 8 during a search operation launched in the Wellamullawaikkal and other areas in the former no-fire zone yesterday.

In the East, troops of the 22 Division found a claymore mine and 400g of C4 explosives in the Uppuweli area of Trincomalee while STF troops of the Kalvanchikudi camp conducting search operations in Thoppigala and Sooriyadi recovered 744 g of explosives among a hoard of other military items.

Meanwhile, the Vavuniya Police acting on a tip recovered 4 suicide jackets, 3 with 4 kg of explosives and one with 10 kg.

Stockpiles of arms hidden or abandoned in the areas occupied by the LTTE in the North remain a major impediment to the early resettlement of the Internally Displaced Persons. The IDPs cannot be resettled until the areas are completely demined and cleared off the weapons.
